About our cause
The Friends of the Old English Garden are a dedicated group of community-minded volunteers who regularly maintain 18 flower beds and surrounding borders of the formal Garden opposite Danson House in Danson Park, Bexleyheath. Originally a formal Old English Rose Garden, since April 2015 our group has transformed these 2 acres by adding a variety of evergreen shrubs, plus thousands of bulbs (donated by the charitable trustees of Metropolitan Public Gardens Association) and perennial plants. The separate flower beds display personality as these are "adopted" and cared for by individuals. Various plants, often propagated from cuttings or seeds grown at home, provide flowers in bloom throughout the year contributing fragrance and visual pleasure to benefit our environment. We constantly garden organically, and do not use chemical controls, unless imperative to do so. Homemade compost and leaf mould are added annually to improve the heavy clay soil.
Open free of charge every day this Old English Garden in Danson Park provides a much-loved and tranquil oasis of enjoyment. It benefits the wellbeing of our gardeners too, who gain stimulation from this healthy and sociable activity. It was even maintained during the Pandemic restrictions and proved a vital local resource for many.
Our annual gardening Awards: A Gold certificate from RHS London-in-Bloom 2024, gained every year since 2021; a 2nd place Gold certificate from Ruxley Manor Garden Centre for Ruxley-in-Bloom Community Gardens contest in both 2023 and 2024; and in October 2024 The London Gardens Society awarded the Friends of the Old English Garden their Certificate of Excellence for showing pride in London ... especially for Community Gardening in the London Community Gardening Competition. We came 3rd in the entire London area! The latest Certificates can be seen proudly displayed on the Friends Noticeboard in the garden.
Essential funds are used to buy tools, gloves, or specialist compost. Propagated plants are available in Spring from our Plant Stall in return for cash donations. (Our Facebook Page and Noticeboard will advertise the dates.) Money raised is totally used to benefit the garden.
We need your help, so please join this local lottery now. Even if you do not visit frequently you may see our endeavours by viewing our Facebook page: Friends of the Old English Garden.
Our grateful thanks for your appreciation on behalf of the Friends Group. Thank you for your support and Good Luck!
